On Holding Your Newborn Child (Grandchild) for the First Time

Rabbi Sheryl Lewart

Jewish tradition teaches us that every child who comes into the world has the potential to bring greater holiness into our lives, and that this holiness is particularly powerful in the relationship between children and their parents (and between children and their grandparents/godparents).

May the joy of this moment surround and embrace you.
May this precious moment fill you with contentment and fulfillment.
May you feel your unbroken connection to those who have come before you.

As you hold your precious child in your arms:
May you always be a loving nurturing symbol of godliness and spiritual values for this unique newborn treasure.

May the Holy One illumine your life with purpose, meaning and love,
so that, when this child gazes into your loving eyes she (he) will always see the reflection of holiness.
Amen.
